Highly Sensitive Person Coaching

Feeling swamped by intense emotions, your surroundings, or interpersonal dynamics might indicate you are a highly sensitive person (HSP). HSPs possess a more reactive nervous system, deeply processing all sensory input. As an HSP, I resonate with our special requirements and virtues. Coaching can offer you strategies to handle stress, affirm your sensitivity, and prosper across all facets of life. Essential for HSPs is learning to manage emotional overwhelm, establish firm boundaries to protect energy levels, and nurture self-compassion to prevent burnout.

As a highly sensitive person myself, I know very well how life can be stressful and cause anxiety and relationship challenges. I have a high sensitivity to certain foods that affects my dietary choices and my quality of life. From a very young age, I would feel nauseous whenever I tasted, smelled, or saw certain foods. For instance, I remember one day when my mother cooked venison. The smell was so repulsive to me that I had to spend the rest of my day outside playing in the backyard until the smell vanished from the house. Therefore, I became a vegetarian, not by choice, but by necessity.

I am affected by weather and season changes, as well as the emotions of others. For instance, every autumn, I experience seasonal affective disorder, which makes me feel depressed and lethargic. However, I have learned to cope with this condition by using light therapy, exercising regularly, and taking vitamin D supplements. I am also influenced by the mood of people around me, which can affect my emotions and energy. For example, I used to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment, where I often felt the stress and negativity of my colleagues and clients. This had a negative impact on my mental health and well-being, but I tried to cope with it by practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, and seeking support from my friends and family. Therefore, being highly sensitive does not stop me from fulfilling my personal and professional goals. The key is to know myself and find ways to cope with my challenges.

My coaching is designed to help you achieve what you want, whether it is more confidence, more balance, more meaning, or more impact. I collaborate with you to understand your needs and goals, and customize my coaching accordingly. I apply various tools and techniques to help you gain clarity, focus, confidence, and resilience. I also offer you feedback, accountability, and encouragement along the way.

What is a Highly Sensitive Person?

A highly sensitive person is a neurodivergent individual who is thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli.

Some refer to this as having sensory processing sensitivity, or SPS for short. While highly sensitive people are sometimes negatively described as being “too sensitive,” it is a personality trait that brings both strengths and challenges.

The term highly sensitive person was first coined by psychologists Elaine Aron and Arthur Aron in the mid-1990s. Elaine Aron published her book, “The Highly Sensitive Person,” in 1996, and interest in the concept has continued to grow since then.

How do you know if you are a highly sensitive person? If you react strongly to criticism, become physically and emotionally overstimulated more easily than others do, and have a rich inner life, you may score highly in sensory processing sensitivity. You may also feel as if you have a higher capacity for empathy and are quite sensitive to others’ moods. The Arons also developed a highly sensitive person test, or a personality questionnaire to help people identify themselves as HSPs. It is known as Aron’s Highly Sensitive Persons Scale (HSPS).

How common are HSPs? Highly sensitive people are thought to make up roughly 15 to 20% of the general population. It is less common to be a highly sensitive person, and society tends to be built around people who notice a little less and are affected a little less deeply. Highly sensitive people may benefit from finding ways to cope with the stresses they often face. This is true for those who recognize themselves as highly sensitive as well as those who have a loved one who is more sensitive than the average person.

What causes high sensitivity? What makes a person highly sensitive likely depends on a variety of factors such as evolution, environment, genetics, and early childhood experiences.
